Green chemistry aims to prevent or reduce pollution at its source by using materials and processes that are environmentally friendly, sustainable and safe. This includes using renewable sources of energy, minimizing waste generation and avoiding the use of toxic and hazardous chemicals. While using water as a solvent and performing reactions at lower temperatures can be part of green chemistry practices, these are not the only defining features. Similarly, grocery store bought chemicals may or may not be sustainable or environmentally friendly, depending on how they are produced and used.
