He placed his coat on the seat beside him but was told by the flight attendant to place his coat on the shelf above his seat. He did so, but at the end of the flight, left the plane without taking his coat with him. He later realized that he did not have his coat and went back to the aircraft to retrieve it. His coat was missing. The airline is not liable for Barton's loss, as it never received possession of the coat.
