The hamate and pisiform bones are both located in the proximal row of carpal bones, and the hamate bone is positioned slightly more laterally than the pisiform. A tangential, inferosuperior projection of the carpal canal is used to visualize the carpal bones and their relationships to each other. If the hamate bone is superimposed over the pisiform bone, it means that the CR is not aligned properly with the carpal canal. By rotating the wrist and hand 10° internally, the hamate bone will shift slightly medially and separate from the pisiform bone, allowing for better visualization of both bones. Increasing or decreasing the CR angle or increasing the extension of the hand and/or wrist will not have an effect on the superimposition of the hamate and pisiform bones.
