According to the Fourth Amendment, an officer may only search the immediate area within the suspect's control during an arrest. This includes the suspect's body and clothing, as well as anything within reach that could pose a threat to officer safety or could be used as evidence in the crime for which the person is being arrested. Searching the bodies of other individuals found with the person being arrested or searching their home or building typically requires a separate search warrant.
