While the part-time militia was effective in guerilla warfare, they were not a dominant force in the Revolutionary War. The American military still required significant foreign assistance throughout the war, particularly from France. The majority of Americans did eventually support independence, but not all were selflessly devoted. The American navy did grow during the war, but it was not yet a well-established and strong force. However, a few thousand American regular troops, such as those led by George Washington, did become an effective fighting force by the end of the war.
