The Oppian Law was passed in 215 BC and limited the amount of gold and other fine jewelry women could own, in order to discourage extravagance during a time of war and economic hardship. It was controversial at the time and eventually repealed in 195 BC. The law did not strengthen the role of the "paterfamilias" or give women the right to own land. While it could be argued that it was a rejection of extravagance, it was not a rejection of austerity but rather a measure aimed at preserving resources during a time of war.
