If a hole is bored through a stud and there is less than 1-1/4 inch between the edge of the hole and the edge of the stud, a steel plate at least 1/16-inch thick or a listed and marked steel plate that is less than 1/16 inch if it still provides equal or greater protection against nail or screw penetration, must be used.
