Both South Africa and the United States have histories of supporting systems of slavery. In the U.S., African slaves were forcibly brought to work on plantations, especially in the southern states, until slavery was abolished in 1865. In South Africa, under Dutch and later British colonial rule, slavery was also practiced, and later, under apartheid, a system of institutionalized racial segregation and discrimination was established.
