The British East India Company was a private firm that acted as an arm of the British government and gained economic and military dominance over much of South Asia. It was responsible for the colonization of India and the establishment of British rule, which lasted until Indian independence in 1947. The company was not comprised of British laborers, was not publicly owned, and was not dissolved after the 1857 uprising (although it did eventually lose its power and influence in India after that event).
