The Missouri Compromise of 1820 dealt with the issue of slave and free states in the United States. It allowed for Missouri to be admitted as a slave state, and Maine to be admitted as a free state, in order to maintain balance in the Senate. It also established a line of latitude (36°30') above which slavery would be excluded from all new states or territories entering the Union, and below which it would be allowed. While the compromise addressed the issue of new states and territories, it did not address the morality of slavery or outlaw it in the Louisiana territory.
