During acute-phase response, plasma concentrations of albumin and iron decrease. Glucose and cholesterol levels may increase, sodium and potassium levels may remain unchanged, and iron and glucose levels may decrease. However, the biggest decreases are seen in albumin and iron levels. The acute-phase response is a systemic response to tissue injury or infection, and one of its key features is a decrease in plasma concentrations of albumin and iron. Glucose and cholesterol may actually increase during the acute-phase response due to increased production of glucose and lipids by the liver.
