After the 1800 election, the judiciary, under the leadership of Chief Justice John Marshall, became the only remaining Federalist stronghold in a government that was otherwise dominated by Thomas Jefferson's Republican Party. This was largely due to the lifetime appointments of Federalist judges made by outgoing President John Adams, in what came to be known as the "Midnight Appointments."
