While Copernicus's heliocentric model was more conceptually accurate and eventually led to a better understanding of the solar system, initially it did not provide significantly better predictions of planetary positions than Ptolemy's geocentric model. Both models had to use epicycles to accurately predict planetary motions, and it wasn't until Kepler's laws of planetary motion that predictions significantly improved.
