Seafloor crust is thinner, younger, and higher in density than continental crust. Seafloor crust is usually less than 10 kilometers thick and is constantly being created at mid-ocean ridges by volcanic activity. In contrast, continental crust can be up to 70 kilometers thick and is much older than seafloor crust. Continental crust also has a lower density than seafloor crust, which is why it "floats" on top of the denser mantle layer.
