Antigens are substances that the immune system recognizes as foreign and can elicit an immune response. Foreign proteins, viruses, bacteria, and cancerous body cells can all act as antigens because they are recognized by the immune system as non-self. Hormones, however, are typically endogenous substances produced by the body for regulation and communication between cells, and are not usually recognized as antigens by the immune system unless they are altered or part of an autoimmune response.
