Southern slaves did create their own distinct culture that included religious piety, African-style songs, and folk magic. Despite their forced labor and restricted mobility, slaves found ways to hold on to their cultural roots and traditions, which helped to sustain their sense of identity and community. Slave culture also included forms of resistance, such as feigning illness, working slowly, or sabotaging tools, as well as open rebellion, such as the Nat Turner rebellion in 1831.
