During the 1800s in southern Africa, the British were generally more sympathetic to the rights of the local population than were the Boers. The Boers, who were of Dutch descent, practiced racial segregation and discrimination against the indigenous black population through a system known as apartheid. The British, while not perfect in their treatment of the local population, generally had a more tolerant attitude toward them and sought to limit the worst abuses of the Boer system.
