The Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 obligated Britain and Japan to support each other in case of war with two or more powers. In 1905, Japan defeated Russia in the Russo-Japanese War, establishing itself as a major world power and challenging the myth of European imperialist invincibility. In 1905, Japan and the United States signed the Taft-Katsura Agreement, which indirectly recognized Japan's dominance over Korea in exchange for Japan recognizing America's territorial claims in the Philippines. Japan annexed Korea in 1910. Japan did attempt to take over China in the Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945, but this was not directly related to the events mentioned in the question.
