The Battle of the Somme was not the first major battle of World War I (there were several before it), but it did result in the death of more than 21,000 British soldiers in a single day, making it one of the bloodiest battles in history. It was fought in France, not Belgium, and did not involve Britain and the Netherlands entering the war. It also had nothing to do with Gallipoli, which was a separate campaign fought in Turkey.
