If they are subject to other loads, such as a second floor storage area, the architect will size them accordingly. When they become joists for the second floor of a two-story building, their framing is identical to the framing of the first floor. The first ceiling joist is set in from the outer edge of the plate on the gable end to permit construction of the framing for the gable end wall. Ceiling joists can be trimmed to follow the rafter shape.
