Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is released by the parathyroid glands in response to low levels of calcium in the blood. One of the functions of PTH is to increase the amount of calcium available in the bloodstream by promoting the release of calcium from bones and increasing the amount of calcium that is reabsorbed by the kidneys.
