The Cambrian period is generally considered to have occurred from around 541 to 485 million years ago. During this time, the Earth experienced several periods of glaciation, but there is little evidence to suggest that polar ice caps existed for much of the Cambrian. Instead, it is believed that much of the glaciation during this time occurred closer to the equator, with ice sheets covering large areas of Gondwana and other continents in the southern hemisphere.
