France and Britain did declare war on Germany, but they remained relatively inactive militarily after the fall of Poland. This period is known as the "Phony War" or "Sitzkrieg" because there was very little actual fighting on either side. The Allies had expected Germany to launch a major offensive, but Hitler chose to focus on securing his gains in Poland and building up his forces for the coming conflict. Meanwhile, the Allies were slow to mobilize their armies and did not take advantage of the lull in the fighting to launch an offensive of their own.
