If a hole is bored into a stud and there is less than 1 1/4" between the edge of the hole and the edge of the stud, a steel plate at least 1/16" thick or a listed and marked steel plate that is less than 1/16" if it still provides equal or greater protection against nail or screw penetration, must be used.
