The lymphatic system is part of both the vascular and immune systems, containing a network of vessels that carries lymph. Lymph is a fluid containing lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) that drains from other tissues during a filtration process. Lymphatic tissues including lymph nodes, the spleen, and the tonsils are lymphatic tissues that filter lymph and trap foreign particles as they travel through the lymphatic system. The thymus is  also an important lymphatic organ as it produces lymphocytes.
Although the lymphatic system is closely related to the circulatory system it does not transport red blood cells.
