The Krebs cycle (which is also called the citric acid cycle) is the second step of cellular respiration and takes place in the mitochondria.
Cellular respiration is the process in which cells break down glucose to release energy, and use the energy to make ATP. Cellular respiration happens in three steps:
1. Glycolysis is the first stage of cellular respiration. It takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. Enzymes split a molecule of glucose into two smaller molecules called pyruvate. This results in a net gain of 2 molecules of ATP, as well as 2 molecules of another energy-storing molecule called NADH that will be used in step three to produce even more ATP.
2. The Krebs Cycle (also called the citric acid cycle) is the second stage of cellular respiration. Here, the pyruvate molecules from glycolysis enter the matrix of a mitochondrion. The Krebs Cycle produces 2 more molecules of ATP and 6 more molecules of NADH.
3. Electron transport is the third stage of cellular respiration and also takes place in a mitochondrion. Here, the NADH molecules produced in glycolysis and the Krebs Cycle are used in this stage to make many more molecules of ATP (28 - 32 molecules).
Overall, one glucose molecule yields 32 to 36 ATP molecules.
