A vector quantity is a quantity that carries meaning of both direction and magnitude. This is opposed to a scalar quantity that only carries magnitude.
Examples of vector quantities are displacement, velocity, and acceleration. Examples of scalar quantities include position and speed.
A car's speedometer shows speed, a scalar quantity. An old car does not know where you started or where you are going. Some new cars give you information on the direction you are headed as well. These are vector quantities. In physics, we use vector quantities.
