The esophagus is located in the thoracic cavity (the chest cavity).
The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat (pharynx) with the stomach. It is part of the digestive system. Like the rest of the digestive tract, it is lined by moist pink tissue called mucosa. The esophagus runs behind the windpipe (trachea) and heart, and in front of the spine.
The esophagus is where the process of peristalsis begins. Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscle contractions that moves food to different organs in the digestive tract.
