Valves exist in a few locations of the heart in order to prevent the backflow of blood. At the opening of the pulmonary trunk and the aorta, the semilunar valves open and close to control blood flow. The semilunar valves are composed of three flaps, which are shaped like a half-moon, hence the name "semi-lunar".
The mitral, or bicuspid valve, and the tricuspid valve are both atrioventricular valves that are located between the left atrium and left ventricle, and the right atrium and right ventricle, respectively.
