South Africa was initially colonized by the Dutch East India Company, also known as the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie), in 1652. This led to the establishment of Cape Town as a supply station for Dutch ships on their way to the East Indies. The Dutch were eventually taken over by the British in the early 19th century. Portugal and Spain did establish colonies in other parts of Africa, but not in South Africa.
