Freedom Summer was a campaign initiated by civil rights organizations to register new black voters across the state of Mississippi, as well as to address the failure of the Civil Rights Act to include a provision on voting rights in the South. The purpose was to bring attention to the disenfranchisement of black citizens and to mobilize them in the struggle for civil rights. While the campaign did bring attention to the issue of Klan violence in Mississippi, that was not the primary purpose. Additionally, while Freedom Summer did provide field experience for new recruits to CORE and SNCC, that was not the primary purpose either.
