HIPAA accomplishes several goals including protecting individuals from discrimination based on their health status because it restricts exclusion from coverage due to preexisting medical conditions (employers are prohibited from denying coverage or charging more for coverage based on an individual's past or present poor health); it created a uniform system for processing, retaining, and securing health care information by encouraging the use of electronic technology, mandating standardization of health-related transactions, and promoting security precautions to maintain the privacy of health information; and perhaps, most importantly, it protects the privacy of individuals with respect to their health care data, and the sharing of such data.
