The probe is a short sequence of nucleic acid that matches a portion of the gene in question. The probe is then allowed to hybridize to suitably prepared cells or histological sections; hybrids are formed with complementary sequences of nucleic acids in a chromosome. Through rough nucleic acid hybridization, the degree of sequence
 identity can be determined and specific sequences located on specific chromosomes detected. A probe does not search for repeating DNA cycles. This laboratory test does not identify the longest or validate the shortest chromosomes.
