Both internal and external fertilization result in the formation of single-celled zygotes. Internal fertilization occurs within the female reproductive system, while external fertilization occurs outside of the body. This can occur in a variety of animal groups, including both invertebrates and vertebrates, and both aquatic and terrestrial animals. The use of copulatory organs may or may not be necessary for fertilization to occur. While external fertilization is common among aquatic animals, it also occurs in some terrestrial animals such as amphibians.
