Thousands of blacks, mostly from the North, enlisted to fight the British. While free blacks were permitted to join the colonial army, enslaved blacks were initially barred from military service. However, as the war dragged on and the need for soldiers grew more urgent, some colonies and individual commanders began to allow enslaved blacks to serve in exchange for their freedom. Britain also initially rejected black recruits, but eventually began to actively recruit enslaved blacks with the promise of freedom. While not all of the slaves who fled to aid the British were re-enslaved after the war, many were not granted the freedom they were promised.
