Many Americans were hesitant to break away from Britain and risk a potentially violent conflict. Additionally, the American business community did not universally support the war effort and often continued to trade with the British. France played a crucial role in the war by providing military aid, but its involvement was not initially motivated by a commitment to American independence; rather, France saw an opportunity to weaken its longtime enemy, Britain. Spain's role in the American Revolution was limited and largely focused on defending its own interests in the region.
