While Adler was a socialist and had a strong social conscience, he was not a life-long communist. In fact, he initially supported the communist party but later became disillusioned with it and focused on his own theories of individual psychology. Additionally, it is not clear whether Adler specifically recommended that students familiarize themselves with Freud's theory of dreams. He did, however, have some influence on the development of Freud's ideas, particularly in the area of psychoanalytic technique.
