Erikson was not rejected as an analyst in training by Freud because he lacked credentials. In fact, Erikson had no formal education in psychology or psychoanalysis, but he had a background in art, history, and literature. He met Freud in Vienna in the 1920s and worked as his secretary and assistant. He was also trained in the Montessori method and was Freud's chauffeur for a time. He did struggle with feeling stifled by the over-protectiveness of the women analysts, particularly because of his male gender.
