The ancient Greeks, such as Pythagoras and Aristotle, had already hypothesized that the Earth was round as early as the 6th century BCE based on observations of the curved shape of the Earth's shadow during lunar eclipses and the fact that ships disappeared below the horizon hull-first. Additionally, Muslim scholars and Chinese astronomers had also recognized the Earth's spherical shape much earlier.
