Excoriation (red, scaly areas with surface loss of skin tissue) occurs in patients whose skin is exposed to bodily fluids such as stool, urine, or gastric juices. Excoriation also occurs in areas where skin rests on skin, such as in the axilla (armpit); under large, pendulous breasts; or in abdominal folds. Exposed areas are more likely to become sun burned or wind burned.
