Chronic periodontitis usually progresses slowly. There can be periods of rapid destruction and quiescence. It tends to have a familial aggregation meaning that family members tend to have the same trait that is not an occurrence due to chance. Aggressive disease states will not respond predictably to nonsurgical periodontal therapy. The disease progresses rapidly. Most clients with aggressive disease appear healthy.
