Alpha-1 antitrypsin is not a fatty acid found in the blood that promotes the activity of elastase in the lungs. Instead, it is a protein found in the blood that helps protect the lungs from the enzyme elastase. Elastase is found in white blood cells (WBCs) and helps to kill invading bacteria and neutralize small particles that are inhaled into the lungs. When WBCs are destroyed, the elastase is released into the bloodstream. Alpha-1 antitrypsin inactivates the elastase so it can be excreted by the body. However, if an individual has low alpha-1 antitrypsin levels, the elastase attacks and destroys the elastic tissues of the lungs which leads to emphysema.
