Daughters of mothers who took diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriages have a higher risk of developing vaginal cancer. DES is a synthetic estrogen that was prescribed to pregnant women between the 1940s and 1970s. While using DES during pregnancy did not cause gross deformities of the arms and legs or abnormally high-pitched and shrill cries, it did increase the risk of vaginal and cervical adenocarcinoma in offspring. There is no known link between DES exposure and adult-onset diabetes.
