Christianity is believed to have arrived in India by the fourth century when the Syrian merchant Thomas of Cana arrived in Malabar coast and converted a group of people known as the Knanaya. The arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498 also brought Portuguese missionaries who further spread Christianity in India. While there are also some claims of Saint Thomas bringing Christianity to India in the first century, the exact historicity of these claims remains disputed.
