The Russian Reformation, also known as the Raskol, was a modest attempt at reforming the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century. It did create a schism, however, known as the Old Believers. While some changes were made, such as introducing local councils, the power of the monasteries remained intact and the attempt to reunite with the Byzantine Church ultimately failed. While Ivan the Terrible played a role in the church's development, he did not put down the reform movement itself.
