Executive Order 9066 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II and authorized the relocation of Japanese Americans from their homes to internment camps. It was based on the belief that they were potential security risks, purely because of their ethnicity. Approximately 120,000 Japanese Americans, two-thirds of whom were American citizens, were forcibly removed and interned for the duration of the war. It is widely recognized as a grave injustice and a violation of civil liberties.
