Katzenbach and Smith argue that true high-performance teams are rare. To be a real high-performance team requires a high level of interdependence, trust, and commitments between all team members. Rather than seeing tasks as individual they argue that everything is collective. Moreover they argue that all members need to be open to each other. This requires a 'leap of faith', where everyone trusts each other.
Whilst if they work well, high-performance teams will far out-perform 'working groups', the cost of getting there is very high. They take a lot of time and working on trust, which means that for most tasks and groups it is not worth the amount of work to achieve this.
