The Articles of Confederation were designed to create a weak central government, which reflected the widespread sentiment of distrust towards a strong central government that existed in the United States at the time. The Articles did not allow for the centralization of power in the federal government, but instead left most powers to the individual states. While the Articles did offer a framework for cooperation between the states, they did not necessarily allow all of the states to prosper financially. Finally, the central government established by the Articles did not have the powers necessary to preserve public peace and order, which was one of the reasons why the Articles ultimately failed as a governing document.
