General Sherman's troops famously liberated Atlanta during the Civil War as part of his campaign through Georgia known as the March to the Sea. While his troops did capture other important cities in the South, including Savannah, Richmond and Petersburg were captured by other Union armies under the command of General Grant. The Shenandoah Valley was also a site of battling during the Civil War, but Sherman was not involved in operations there.
