Self-schemas are mental frameworks that organize and guide our perceptions of ourselves. We tend to hold self-schemas for aspects of the self that we are sure we possess, such as personality traits, abilities, and interests. These are aspects of the self that have been consistently experienced and recalled in different situations, leading us to develop a cognitive structure around them. It is unlikely that we would hold a self-schema for aspects of the self that we do not consider important, or for goals that we have not yet achieved. While we may aspire to possess certain characteristics, they would not necessarily be part of our self-schema until we have actually achieved them and integrated them into our self-concept.
